on this front. president obama saying that he's not going to agree to a package that only involves spending cuts, but republicans, house speaker john boehner saying that that is what they are going to be fighting for. the white house has gotten leverage after this last budget battle because, remember, it included tax hikes on wealthier americans as well as spending cuts and they think that will give them more growth fund as they enter this next round of negotiations. house speaker john boehner saying he's essentially done negotiating with the president one-on-one. we might see different folks sitting at the table early on in these next round of negotiations. i can tell you that president obama according to my shoreses at the white house will be hitting the road very close after the inauguration. he believes this is one of his strongest tactics to make his argument to the american people to let them pressure congress to get something done. you heard him preview this argument that if the nation does not increase its debt ceiling and if this becomes a long, drawn-out battle like the one we saw back

's being the best vice president he can be to president barack obama and to this country. he'll make a decision about what his future holds over the next couple of years. nothing -- no decision has been made or he'll make. he's focused on what you see before him and that is making sure that we don't have another repeat of what happened, the tragedy in connecticut or colorado or in virginia. that's what he's focused on as well as obviously a whole other array of domestic and foreign policy issues. but i've been very proud of him. he's been very effective and it's a very effective partnership between he and the president of the united states. >> we'll see what he comes up with again, the deadline he wants to provide the president with options is by tuesday. delaware attorney general beau biden. thanks, sir. >> thanks, thomas. >> we'll bring our political power panel, bacon and joe sestak and ms nbc contributor. perry, i want to start with you and based on what i was able to maybe get out of beau a little bit, more like the matix avoiding that conversation. he was able to help facilitat

hagel at the top spot. the obama's administration's baitle plan is beginning to take shape. >> chuck hagel is the leader that our troops deserve. he is an american patriot. he enlisted in the army and volunteered for vietnam. to this day chuck bears the scars and shrapnel from battles he fought in our name. >> hagel himself, the former senator defending his own record in a exclusive interview with his hometown newspaper, telling "lincoln general star" the distortions of my record have been astounding. will the white house make the sell on capitol hill? a place where even senators in the president's own party remain divided on this pick. >> i believe the president should be able to have his team, but the advice and consent of the senate is an important responsibility and we have to do independently and there are questions that need to be answered. >> chuck hagel is his own man. he wears no man's collar. he will continue to be his own man. that is the kind of person you want as secretary of state when you're in the room deciding about war and peace, you want somebody to give their hone
